02.27.05 - According to the Greensboro News & Record, the Zayre stores that became Ames stores opened in 1968, became Ames in 1989, and closed by 1992.

01.31.05 - Ames bought several Zayre stores in the late ‘80s in N.C. about the same time they came to Roanoke for the first time. They went out of business about the same time too. As far as I know all the following was originally built as Zayre in the late ‘60s-early ‘70s.
Mostly vacant. Zayre subdivided the space for a T.J. Maxx in the ‘80s, and when Ames closed, they turned the Ames side into a discount grocery store. That closed in 1995 or so, and a Lowes Foods opened, but didn’t last very long. The Lowes Foods moved out around 2001 or so.
