This isn\'t where the Ames was. The Ames was off of the Brookpark Road Extension, across from the Guitar Center. It was demolished years ago to build the new Tops store.

Thank you!T
Thank you for posting photos of the Fall River Ames/Zayre store. I spent so much time in that store while Zayre and then Ames. I was just in the Cranston store today (now a building 19) and was flooded with memories of this store. The cranston store looks more like Zayre inside, and they still have the big brown coils from the heating/air conditioning that made so much noise!
Thanks for a trip down memory lane! I wish this store was still open! Sadly now that National Wholesale Liquidators went out of business the building got a face lift as it becomes Burlington Coat Factory.

The old original Ames was just off the thruway where a movie theatre sits now.

The LaPorte location was built as an Ames store in the late 80's. It was built on the former Allis-Chalmers tractor plant site, along with the Kroger store that operates to this day. After Ames closed, for a short time it was a Quality Farm & Fleet and now 1/3 of the original Ames building is now occupied by Tractor Supply & Co.

Home Office
I started working for Ames in Home Office in the old days when we actually ran into the Gilman brothers in the hallways -- and they knew most of us by name!
Merchandising, Operations and Advertising were located in an old Grants (remember them?) store; the Executive Offices and IT were in a bunch of smaller shops; and Finance was in the old Finast. Ultimately I ended up in West Hartford in the old Coleco building. All I remember about that was how dark and depressing it was.

Ames Alden
After a long time sitting vacant, Tractor Supply Co. has moved into one of the empty stops next to this old store. Hopefully this could lead to someone renting out the old Ames spot soon.

Home Office
The store on the left (street) side of Home Office was a Grant's before Ames moved in. When I began working there in the early 80's, that was home to Operations, Merchandising and Advertising. It was also the main entrance to the building. I think IT and the executive offices were in what had been smaller shops. The Finance Dept was in the old Finast.

Claremont NH Ames #206
I worked at this store back in the late 70's, and eventually became an assistant manager in 1989 at Store #355 in Newport NH.
The Claremont store closed sometime in the mid to late 90's, can't remember exactly when, as I had moved from the area by then. If I can find out the date, I'll post it later.
The store was left empty for a while, then some kind of bottled water plant was there briefly. The building was torn down, probably in 2007. The property was bought by one of the local churches, and they are supposed to build a church on the site. There is currently a large cross erected at the front of the parking lot.

BEFORE it was Ames
My family lived down the street from this location since 1978. Before it was Ames, it was first called Mammoth Mart, then it was called King's. Since we were so close to it, both my brother and I worked there as teenagers in the 90's. In the stock room in the back, one of the water pipes still said "To Mammoth Mart."

Old Timer
As a previous Ames employee for 18 years in the lower Hudson Valley, just a quick note on 2 Ames locations- Carmel, NY is now a Hannaford Grocery store, and Pawling NY store is now a strip mall.

Tumblers
Interesting website!
I remember Ames from our summer trips to Maine in the 80s. One specific thing I remember was the Ames "tumblers" that they gave away sometime in the mid-late 80s. We got some and as kids thought it was hilarious that a cup was called a "tumbler," so we would go around saying "I want an Ames tumbler!!" whenever we needed a cup.

wow nice photo! I wonder what year this is from. I never remember a Holyoke Ames, must have been torn down long ago. I love those "Holyoke" lightposts, makes me think of going down I-91 as a little kid and knowing Holyoke was getting close by the lightposts

Was this one a Caldor? There was a Caldor near me that became an Ames, then Burlington Coat Factory, but even that closed.

I can say after visiting Peterborough, NH last weekend and doing a photoshoot of the Ames, this is NOT Peterborough NH, it is very similar but not quite right to be Peterborough.

This Ames held considerable nostalgia for me
It definitely had the Red logo and never went green.
I only went to it a few times as a very small child. I moved from Claremont when I was only 4 and had forgotten Claremont ever had an Ames, it was entirely on the other side of town from the shopping district. Ames shared this plaza with Grand Union.
I drove to this site yesterday (1-24-09) and it took me a while to find this plaza. The reason? There is no building here anymore, it is a completely empty parking lot. And to add to matters, the entire lot is currently unplowed with about a foot of snow on it. I would have thought it was just an empty field except for one thing, the lights are still standing after all of these years indicating the pavement below.
Anybody have any idea when this Ames closed? (Must have been early 90's) and did ANYTHING ever go into this building after? I'm thinking it was abandoned for years, any clue when the building was completely torn down?

Man I miss the really old school musty ones like this. You don't get that feeling that you used to get walking into these weird little buildings. This is how I always remember ames being way back in the day

Where does the time go?
I can't believe it's been 20 years since I was in that store... I remember going there as a kid when it was a Zayre Store and begging my mom to buy me Stompers and He Man. Sad to see it gone.

Photos
I just want to say i like your photos of worcester. But you know what is missing is photos of back streets where the people are ,the real Worcester, I noticed on other sites nobody puts them on there. When in reality thats the meat of the city, I moved to SC 13 yrs. ago and haven't been to Worcester in a long time. Me and my family would love to see the real city the way it used to be. My friends that are still in Worcester tell me it has gone down hill. No more factories there, jobs are scarce. Boston is far more advanced than Worcester I think it should be the other way around. All Worcester has is Banks and Bars, that's not progress.....Thanks for letting me bend your ear...Scraps macon-county-rednecks@hotmail.com
